Ireland was once a tree covered country and like many ancient cultures, there was a respect and reverence for what nature provided. The letters in Ireland's earliest alphabet, Ogham script, were all named after trees. The Oak tree was the most sacred to the druids and was associated with the god Dagda. The druids were believed to worship and practice their rites in oak groves. Doire, the old Irish for oak, is found in many place names, Derry being the most famous City.
