The bee was regarded as a sacred and wise animal because of its life-giving honey and useful beeswax. In Ireland there were even 'Bee Laws' known as Bechbreatha, governing the business of beekeeping. Bees were thought to have a strong bond with their keepers. It was important to inform the bees of any changes in the household, births, deaths, and marriages. In parts of Ireland, when there was a death in the family it was customary to put a black cloth over the hive so the bees could mourn as well. They were also believed to be spirit messengers between this world and the other.
