Selkies often depicted as female mythological creatures are common to Irish, Scottish and Icelandic folklore; they lived as seals but shed their skin to visit the earthly world in human form. Humans would often fall in love with them, but the selkie would never reveal her watery homeland. They were often seen gazing longingly out to the sea, torn between their earthly life and the sea. The sea in Irish mythology is seen as the gateway between this world and the otherworld and selkies moved easily between them.
