Like all great romantic cultures Irish lore is peppered with stories of forbidden love. Grainne
was betrothed to Fionn MacCumhaill after his wife died. On meeting the much aged warrior,
older than her father, she fell for the younger warrior Diarmuid and so begins their flight
across Ireland with Fionn MacCumhaill in pursuit. Fionn in later years mellowed and invited
Diarmuid to hunt on the slopes of Benbulben. However as prophecised Diarmuid was fatally
wounded by a wild boar. Ben Bulben is thought to be the final resting place of lovers
Diarmuid and Grainne
