A gold hoard found in Limavady, Ulster, contains a beautifully worked boat made in pure gold with delicate oars crafted out of gold wire. It is believed to have been an offering to Manannán Mac Lir, a Celtic sea god; associated with sea mists he moves easily between this life and the otherworld. He figures widely in Irish, Manx, Scottish and Welsh literature.
