Wind is a prevalent but invisible force throughout Ireland. The Oíche na Gaoithe Móire or the night of the Big Wind on 6th January 1839, the greatest recorded storm in Irish history, was thought to be the work of the fairies or supernatural forces. The old Irish for wind is Sí or Sídhe also meaning fairy folk and in the Book of Leinster the aos sí “inhabitants of the fairy mound” walked freely among the living and are said to be our spiritual ancestors.
