Boann is an early Irish goddess descended directly from the Tuatha Dé Danann. With her lover Dagda she is the mother of Aengus. To hide their affair from her husband Nechtan, Dagda made the sun stand still for nine months and Aengus was conceived and born in one day. Though forbidden to by her husband, Boann approached the magical otherworldly Well of Segai Boann s, the font of all Wisdom. She challenged its power by walking around it causing the waters to surge up violently and rush down to the sea, creating the River Boyne. With her name interpreted as "White cow” she was believed to have created the Milky Way, Pass of the White cow, sprinkling her sacred milk to create the stars.
