Brú na Bóinne is a designated World heritage site. It is dominated by the three great
passage tombs of Knowth, Dowth and Newgrange. It is also famous for the quantity and
richness of neolithic art found within this area. There are a wide range of symbols incised or picked into the rock including circles, spirals, arcs, and geometric chevrons and lozenges. There are many theories about the meaning of the art symbols including that they were a form of writing, or abstract anthropomorphic representations of human faces; others that the art was astronomical, representing solar, lunar and stellar images. Others have suggested that the art was inspired during an altered state of consciousness. Direct comparisons have been made with Australian first people’s art. In this particular design the arcs or lunula shapes are compared to the first people’s symbol for a man.  Others suggest the lunula crescent shape could represent the phases of the moon.
