There are many standing stones throughout Ireland with holes in them. They have been
documented as being used for many purposes. The one I am most familiar with is “Cloch an Aonaigh” -"The Stone of the Gathering” in Glencolmcille, Donegal. According to popular belief young lovers would entwine their fingers inside the hole, one on either side of the stone to reaffirm their love. In other parts of Ireland such holed stones are known as love, marriage or betrothal stones. Another holed stone in Kildare is known as “Leac na Mionn” - “Stone of the Oaths” It is likely that it was used to swear oaths, seal promises and make deals no doubt sealed by intertwining the fingers of the individuals through the hole. Other historians record pregnant women nearing the end of their pregnancy would draw cloths through the hole in order to ensure a favourable delivery.

This pendant measures 27mm long and 10mm wide.
