Ireland was once a tree covered country and early Brehon law had a strict system of
regulating the cutting felling and use of trees and shrubs. The oak was considered one of the most important of trees. Associated with the supernatural, it was sacred to the druids and was associated with the god Dagda. The druids were believed to worship and practise their rites in oak groves. It also provided acorn flour, food for animals, hard wood for construction and bark for tanning. The letters in Ireland's earliest alphabet, Ogham script, were all named after trees. This design represents the Ogham for oak, two strokes to the left from a centre line. Doire, the old Irish for oak grove, is found in many place names, Derry being the most famous city.

These earrings measure 21mm long and 11mm wide.
