The Irish name for the much maligned little hedgehog is "gráinneog" meaning ugly little one! It was believed that it stole milk from cows and the yolk from hens' eggs and as a result, it wasn't the most popular of animals! Thought to predict the weather, a hedgehog seen out of hibernation on the first day of Spring 1 February was a sign of good weather to come. I personally love hedgehogs and hope you do too!
