The robin is very common in Ireland. It's a very popular, colourful and playful bird and it is considered unlucky to harm it in any way. It was a tradition in parts of Donegal to call girls by the name of birds, including Spideog; this was done to confuse the fairies who may take away the children. Incidentally, Colm, meaning dove, is a name that still persists today. In folk tales, the robin is always portrayed as helpful to the heroes in their quests and consoling to the sick.
