The sheep is a very popular and "iconic" animal integral to the Irish landscape. The ram was a symbol of virility and many very old Irish fairs would have had the prize ram at centre stage. The sheep was integral to Irish country life and was much valued for its meat and wool which provided food, clothing, blankets, and bedding. Today it's seen as more of a comical character and a very familiar character in the Irish countryside.
