The Spider - a much feared but respected of insects. It’s discovery in a house can lead to screaming..followed by cries of “get it out”..followed by… “but don’t kill it!” It was and still is considered unlucky to kill a spider. The origin of the Irish word is unclear, but “damhán” means little ox. Maybe it refers to its industriousness! While not an obvious candidate for deification, in Africa Anansi was a spider deity who outwitted and defeated many more powerful deities.
