Tobar is the Irish word for Well, Spring or Source. Many towns get their names from wells
and springs with Tipperary (Tiobraid Árann- source of the River Ará) being one example.
Wells are significant in Irish mythology being regarded as portals to the Celtic otherworld,
which was believed to exist on a parallel plane to our own. It was believed you could enter
this realm through water be it through the sea, lakes springs and wells. Boann, the Irish cow
Goddess, challenged the power of a well by walking around it "tuathal"or counter clockwise,
which resulted in the waters surging up violently and creating the River Boyne. This design
is inspired by the depth and mystery of these otherworldly portals.
